A boiler doesn't last forever. But when is it smart to replace it rather than repair it? We've listed the key signs, so you don't keep heating with an outdated appliance longer than necessary.
1. Your boiler is 15 years or older
The average lifespan of a well-maintained boiler is 15 to 20 years. From around 12 years, efficiency noticeably declines and parts become harder to find. If your boiler is over 15 years old, a new one often delivers a lower energy bill straight away.
2. Breakdowns are piling up
The odd breakdown is normal. But does the engineer have to come out every season, with repair costs adding up? Then a new appliance works out cheaper in the long run. A rule of thumb: if a repair costs more than half the price of a new boiler, replacing is the wiser choice.
3. Your energy bill is climbing
Old boilers (conventional or early condensing models) have far lower efficiency than a modern condensing combi. Switching to a new A-rated appliance can quickly save hundreds of euros a year on gas, depending on your usage.
4. Not enough or inconsistent hot water
Notice the shower no longer stays warm, or the temperature fluctuates? Then the capacity may no longer suit your household, or the boiler is worn out. When you replace it, you immediately choose the right capacity for your situation.
5. The boiler makes strange noises
Ticking, banging or whistling sounds point to limescale, air problems or wear of the heat exchanger. Sometimes bleeding is enough, but persistent noises in an older boiler are often a sign the end is near.
6. You're renovating or going greener
Fitting solar panels, insulating your home or considering a (hybrid) heat pump? Then this is the ideal moment to review your heating as a whole. A new, well-matched boiler works more efficiently alongside these measures.
Key takeaways
- From 15 years old, replacing is usually cheaper than carrying on
- If repairs add up to more than half the cost of a new boiler, replacing pays off
- A modern A-rated appliance lowers your gas use and energy bill immediately
